Brain-derived neurotrophic factor also known as BDNF is a protein which in humans is encoded by the BDNF gene.BDNF is a member of the "neurotrophin" family of growth factors – which are related to the canonical "Nerve Growth Factor", NGF. The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the nerve growth factor family. It is induced by cortical neurons, and is necessary for survival of striatal neurons in the brain. The pathogenic role of brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the incisional pain is poorly understood. The present study explores the role of the BDNF in the incision-induced pain hypersensitivity. Expression of this gene is reduced in both Alzheimer's and Huntington disease patients. A longitudinal incision was made in one plantar hind paw of isoflurane-anesthetized rats. Dorsal root ganglias (DRG) and spinal cords were removed at various postoperative times (1–72 h).
This gene may play a role in the regulation of stress response and in the biology of mood disorders.

Multiple transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been described for this gene. BDNF promotes neuronal survival and differentiation, and has been shown to play a critical role in memory formation and synaptic regulation. Signaling occurs mainly through the tyrosine kinase receptor TrkB, although binding to the lower-affinity receptor p75NTR has also been demonstrated.
